Of the 4,500,000 pieces minted between 1890 and 1896, 3,971,683 pieces were removed from circulation by virtue of the Royal Decree of September 4, 1898. With the melted silver, broken coins were minted for the national market. Of the 1896 issue (1,500,000 pieces) almost all of the coinage was withdrawn before being put into circulation.
